One of the most troublesome consequences of Enes Kanter‘s situation with the Turkish government, besides the warrant for his arrest, and how he is being blackballed by president Recep Tayyip Erdogan for publicly opposing him, is how his circle of support is being directly affected because of it.

During an episode of USA TODAY Sports' A to Z podcast with Sam Amick and Jeff Zillgitt, the Oklahoma City Thunder forward/center explained how his family and friends could face major consequences if they attempt to reach out to him.

“If family or friends in Turkey text me, they might be in jail the next day,” Kanter said.

Born in Switzerland, but of Turkish citizenship and heritage, Kanter was detained at a Romanian airport weeks ago after having his passport “canceled”, ultimately being allowed to continue his flight after hours of waiting.

The Thunder big man journaled his travel through social media and has been actively looking for U.S. citizenship after what happened at the airport.
