The Atlanta Hawks went out on a limb and selected French forward Zaccharie Risacher with the first pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, sparking debates from across social media and the blogosphere.

Risacher's selection was panned by Frank Mason, the former Kansas Jayhawks guard who played against him overseas. Mason unleashed a series of tweets questioning exactly what Trae Young and the Hawks' brass had just done, leading to widespread debates online.

The info was shared at a time when NBA Draft first round grades for the earliest picks were handed out. Info on the New Orleans Pelicans' potential pursuit of Young was also revealed.

Risacher has a ton of potential according to most NBA scouts, and now it is being discussed online after Mason's contrarian comments.

Mason said there's “no way” Risacher is the number one overall pick. He released his assessment of the 6-foot-9, 195 pound forward on X.

His post was viewed over 260,000 times as of Wednesday night.

The Hawks will not pick again in this year's draft unless they trade back into it, as their 40th overall selection currently belongs to the Portland Trail Blazers.

Mason adds qualifying statement to Risacher roast

Mason added a qualifying statement about his roast of Risacher that is also making the rounds.

“Solid young player but number one pick is absurd,” Mason, who played for the Orlando Magic in 2020-2021, added.

Mason bristled at the notion that he was hating on the number one pick of Trae Young's Hawks as he continued to share his thoughts.

“LOL, hating? Never, I like the youngin as a player but I think as the number one pick you gotta be able to do more than just shoot 3s and play defense,” he added.

“But it's also about fit sooooo…I guess that was the best option for the Hawks.”
