If you’ve finished the third act of the Genshin Impact 1.6 event’s story quest, Maguu Kenki finally wakes up and stays as a field boss. He awaits for eager players to challenge him after centuries of age and slumber. Located at the centermost island of Golden Apple Archipelago, Maguu Kenki wields a deadly mix of Anemo and Cryo attacks. Players have to adequately prepare themselves if they want to beat this boss and reap the rewards. If you’re looking forward to rolling for Kazuha in the future, now is the time to farm the boss, as it drops Kazuha’s Ascension materials, along with other field boss drops.

Team Composition for Genshin Impact‘s Maguu Kenki

Any good team composition should work when fighting Maguu Kenki, though there are some play styles that could have a more difficult time defeating the boss. As always, it’s safer to bring healing characters like Jean, Barbara, or Qiqi, or shield characters like Zhongli or Diona. Diona, in particular, can provide a durable shield that’s resistant to Cryo, which can prove quite useful for defending yourself against Maguu Kenki’s Cryo attacks. Maguu Kenki can often(but not always) block projectiles from hitting it, so melee characters definitely have the advantage over ranged characters.

Fighting Maguu Kenki is very straightforward, so there’s no annoying mechanics like revive phases, healing phases, or shield phases. Its attacks hit wide and hard though, so always be on your toes and conserve as much stamina for evading its dangerous attacks. Because of his simple mechanics, expect hard-hitting attacks and prepare for them.

The Boss Fight's Two Phases

Maguu Kenki’s fight can be broken up into two phases. The boss has four moves during the first phase, all being not that dangerous and easily dodgeable. One of the attacks is when Maguu Kenki deploys its mask towards the player, and attacks with AoE cryo damage. Another one is Maguu Kenki thrusting his mask forward in front of him, dealing Anemo damage. The other two attacks are a barrage of sword swings and a sword sweep, able to hit players near it.

Once Maguu Kenki’s health reaches around half, it enters its second phase, and now possesses three powerful attacks. These attacks cover a massive area, and players now have to be cautious and not be too greedy when approaching this phase of the fight.

The second phase starts with one of its attacks, stabbing the ground with its katana and creating a massive blast of Anemo around it. The windup of this attack is quite long, so players should have enough time to recognize the attack and run away from the AoE. Another attack is when Maguu Kenki creates a clone and both send a barrage of sword slashes directed at the player’s location. If you’re not careful, this attack can easily demolish your active character, so be sure to just run perpendicular to the attack once you see this coming. Finally, Maguu Kenki can create a vacuum around it, sucking in players as it prepares to do two slashes of increasing AoE, with the first dealing Anemo damage and the second dealing Cryo damage. Melee characters can easily fall trap to this, and if you find yourself out of stamina during this attack, you better have i-frames ready to avoid this.

General Strategy for Genshin Impact‘s Maguu Kenki

The general strategy for this fight is to always keep your health high, conserve stamina enough for evading attacks, and bursting the boss during big openings. Having a durable shield can definitely make this fight easier, and having high burst damage can easily end this fight in a blink of an eye.

Maguu Kenki’s fight is unique yet straightforward, possibly even the simplest to beat among all the field bosses. Without the annoying mechanics certain Hypostases possess, or requiring specific counters to defeat it, players are free to test out different compositions and see what’s best for them.
