Georgia football head coach Kirby Smart is not among those who are concerned about the current sign-stealing investigation concerning Jim Harbaugh and the Michigan Wolverines football program. Smart's Bulldogs currently sit at number one in the country, with Michigan right behind them at number two, but the real focus for the Wolverines as of late has been allegations that they have violated NCAA rules in scouting their opponents.
Recently, Kirby Smart was asked about the controversy and whether he noticed anything fishy when Georgia football took on Michigan in the 2021-22 Orange Bowl as part of the College Football Playoff, and his response could be interpreted as a subtle shot at the program.
“There's nothing I remember about the Michigan game that makes me think that [happened],” said Smart, per Jordan D. Hill of 247 Sports.
Georgia absolutely obliterated Michigan in that game by a score of 34-11. The Bulldogs had just finished an undefeated regular season at that point before the demolition of the Wolverines, which they followed up by winning their first national championship in 40 years a couple of weeks later.
Smart and the Bulldogs repeated that effort by winning their second straight championship in 2022-23.
Michigan, meanwhile, is still searching for its first championship of the Jim Harbaugh era despite making the Playoff each of the last two seasons. The sign-stealing allegations have hung a cloud over what has been a dominant start to the regular season for the Wolverines, although it should be noted that Michigan has yet to play a ranked team so far on the campaign.
The investigation is still ongoing.
