A visual novel setting up the events in the game is now available for download. Before playing the main game, play Ghostwire Tokyo Prelude.

Sony and Bethesda Softworks just shadow-dropped a visual novel game that nobody expected was coming. Titled Ghostwirte Tokyo Prelude, the visual novel game is set before the events of the main game. It explains the reasons why people suddenly vanished from Tokyo and where the supernatural beings that suddenly roam the streets came from.

The PlayStation Blog post by Bethesda's Patrick Wilhelm explains: “The story of Prelude focuses on KK, a wisened detective investigating mysterious phenomenon set roughly six months right before the events of Ghostwire: Tokyo. Following a lead on a missing friend, KK and his fellow investigators stumble upon what can only be described as urban legends coming to life…”

Many games journalists and pundits noted how Ghostwire Tokyo severely lacked hype towards its release, and many fans expected much more from the game's marketing. This is, then, a nice surprise, albeit something wholly unexpected. It doesn't really give us a taste of the game's features and mechanics, but it at least lets us settle into the world where we'll be playing. We wish a demo would also be out before the game's release, so we can really get a feel of the first-person supernatural horror game first before buying in.
