The New York Giants made headlines when they decided to select running back Saquon Barkley with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. It appears team president and CEO John Mara has no regrets about their decision.

It is no secret that New York has gotten off to an abysmal start to the 2018 NFL season. However, according to Judy Battista of NFL.com, Mara still feels they made the right choice in the draft:

“We went with the best player in the draft. I still believe he was the best player in the draft.” Said he's thrilled with what Saquon has done already.

There is good reason for Mara to be satisfied. Running backs are very seldom taken in the top-5 nowadays due to the pass-heavy nature of the NFL. However, Barkley quickly proved to be one of the few exceptions. Not only did he boast an impressive college resume, but his performance in the NFL Combine assured his status as one of the best prospects in his draft class.

More importantly, he has followed through on the hype so far in the 2018 NFL season. Barkley has rushed for 438 yards and four touchdowns on 84 carries. The rookie has also tacked on 40 receptions for 373 yards and two touchdowns as well. His prowess s both a runner and receiver has made him New York's clear-cut workhorse back.

Despite his massive success, the Giants still find themselves at 1-5 this season. Furthermore, their struggles under center with quarterback Eli Manning have started to reach a boiling point. This has raised questions about whether or not New York was better off drafting a potential successor rather than a workhorse. Regardless, it has become evident that they will need to find a replacement for Manning in the near future.
