The New York Giants are preparing for the 2022 NFL Draft. However, they had some business to take care of before Thursday night regarding quarterback Daniel Jones. News broke Thursday afternoon that the team did not exercise Jones' fifth-year option.

ESPN's Dianna Russini tweeted the news.

While this was widely expected, it's still a big deal for the New York franchise. Jones was drafted sixth overall in 2019 and originally slated to be Eli Manning's backup. However, he quickly earned his position as the starter and was expected to be a long-term franchise quarterback. With the Giants' latest decision, this storyline is likely coming to an end.

Jones is still on contract through the 2022-2023 season. However, does this decision mean that the Giants could be entertaining their options moving forward? Coincidentally, this news broke less than eight hours before the 2022 NFL Draft.

The Giants have two early first-round opportunities with the fifth and seventh picks. And, there are a lot of quality quarterbacks in the 2022 draft class for the franchise to take a chance on.

Of course, that's just one possibility. Mel Kiper's latest mock draft has the Giants picking up offensive tackle Charles Cross and edge Jermaine Johnson II in the first round. Regardless of what happens this weekend, the Giants are most likely going to have to find a new quarterback before the beginning of the 2023-2024 season.
