The New York Giants are still looking for their first win of the 2018 NFL season. Unfortunately, they will be short-handed on the defensive side of the ball with cornerback Eli Apple and linebacker Olivier Vernon ruled out for Week 3.

Both Apple and Vernon have been nursing injuries this week. However, New York has officially announced they will be unavailable versus the Houston Texans, via Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk:

The team released its final injury report of the week on Friday and it shows that linebacker Olivier Vernon and cornerback Eli Apple have been ruled out of the contest.

Needless to say, the update strikes a blow to New York's chances at a win this week. Both players had been clear starters for the Giants coming into the regular season. Vernon has been their best pass-rusher over the last several years, however, he has missed some serious time since suffering an ankle injury in August. As a result, the team has had to rely on linebackers Connor Barwin and Lorenzo Carter in his stead.

Meanwhile, Apple suffered a groin injury last week versus the Dallas Cowboys. It was severe enough to keep him out of the second half and it does not seem to have gotten any better given his status for this week. This means the Giants will look to cornerbacks B.W. Webb and Donte Deayon as his replacements. They will certainly have their work cut out for themselves when they square off against a Texans passing attack led by quarterback Deshaun Watson and DeAndre Hopkins.
