The Chicago Bears made the decision to start Mitchell Trubisky in Week 1 against the Detroit Lions. They made a deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars for Nick Foles, but they did not feel like it was time to give up on their former No. 2 overall pick. Early on, this looked like a disastrous decision.

Chicago came out and could not get anything going offensively. They trailed the Lions 23-6 heading into the fourth quarter. Even though this was a complete collapse by the Lions, there is credit that has to be given to the Bears for their fourth quarter effort.

The Bears scored a touchdown four plays into the fourth quarter to give them some hope. Chicago then took advantage of a missed field goal and interception by Matthew Stafford to score two touchdowns and take the lead. A late drop in the end zone by D'Andre Swift helped the Bears survive and steal this victory.

Mitchell Trubisky went from complete dumpster fire in this game to putting it all together in the fourth and leading his team back.

Mitchell Trubisky's Grade in Week 1

Mitchell Trubisky, Anthony Miller, Lions, Bears

Trubisky entered this season trying to change the narrative surrounding his name but through three quarters, it looked as though nothing changed. Over the first three quarters, Trubisky went 12-26 for 153 yards while leading the Bears to just six points. Once the fourth quarter came around, it was a whole new ball game.

In the final quarter, Trubisky went 8-10 for 89 yards and three touchdowns. It began with a two-yard touchdown pass to Jimmy Graham to get the Bears within 10. After a missed field goal, Trubisky led Chicago on a five play scoring drive. He would complete all five passes ending in a touchdown to Javon Wims.

Now it gets interesting. At 23-20, the Lions just had to take care of the football and they were unable to. Kyle Fuller picked off Stafford and the Bears were in business. Two plays later, Mitchell Trubisky hit Anthony Miller for a 27-yard touchdown to miraculously take the lead. With 15 minutes left in the game, there was no one in the world who thought the Bears could score 21 unanswered points to win this game.

This is a devastating loss for the Lions. This game should have been in hand with a 17-point fourth quarter lead and a 10-point lead with four minutes left. On the other hand, credit to the Bears. They were able to take advantage of a bad defense in Detroit and a bad head coach in Matt Patricia.

As for Trubisky, he completely turned his line around. Over the first three quarter, Trubisky looked poor. He was given time in the pocket and could not hit an open receiver. It was as if a switch flipped in the fourth quarter, and that is when it matters the most.

This was not a perfect performance from Trubisky but he finished 20-36 for 242 yards and three touchdowns. There are still plenty of holes on the team and plenty of speculation surrounding Trubisky, but this is a major confidence boost heading into Week 2.
