Clint Capela wants to make his Atlanta Hawks debut this season, not in 2020-21.

Capela is still recovering from his heel injury. The center told Hawks reporters on Thursday he hates just sitting on the bench and watching other people play ball.

Via The Athletic:

Capela said he 100 percent wants to play again this season because “I’m not here to sit on the bench and clap my hands. My job is to go out there and play and be as dominant as I can. When I don’t do that, it’s hard.”

On the Hawks, Capela figures to flourish with All-Star point guard Trae Young. Despite being in just his second year in the NBA, Young has already established himself as one of the best passers in the league

Capela, though, will have an adjustment period mentally now that he’s with the Hawks. Atlanta has one of the worst records in the NBA, while the Houston Rockets are one of the best teams in the West and have championship aspirations with MVPs James Harden and Russell Westbrook leading the charge.

Before getting traded to the Hawks, the Rockets signed Capela to a five-year, $90 million contract in the summer of 2018. He’s making $14.9 million this season. Capela appeared in 39 games for the Rockets this season. He averaged 13.9 points, 13.8 rebounds and 1.8 blocks while shooting 62.9 percent from the field and 52.9 percent from the free throw line.

Now 25 years old, Capela has career NBA averages of 12.2 points, 9.7 rebounds and 1.5 blocks in 334 appearances. He was the 25th overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft.

The Hawks are 19-44 on the season. They have the second-worst record in the East.
