Miami Heat swingman Jimmy Butler turned down his last invitation to play for Team USA in 2019 after he was invited to the preliminary training camp roster for the FIBA World Cup. It appears this rejection might become permanent.

Butler previously won gold with Team USA in the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, but he joked that this might be the end of the line when it comes to his international duties:

“I told [Carmelo Anthony] that if he plays [in the Olympics], I play,” Butler joked during a recent Instagram Live interview, according to Anthony Chiang and Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald. “Melo said that he’s not playing.”

Butler and teammate Bam Adebayo were among the names on the preliminary Team USA roster for the Tokyo Olympics, which have since been rescheduled to 2021. However, it seems the Heat star has had enough action after walking away with gold around his neck in 2016.

Butler recently signed a four-year, $142 million max contract to join the Heat this past summer after a completing a sign-and-trade with his former team, the Philadelphia 76ers.

The 30-year-old is averaging team highs in points (20.2), assists (6.1) and steals (1.7) in his first season with the franchise. Miami missed the playoffs last season, but Butler had them sitting in the No. 4 spot in the Eastern Conference at the time of the NBA's shutdown.

Adebayo also played a key role in this rise, and he could be a whole different story after getting his long-awaited All-Star nod this year. Team USA has been looking for big men who can pass and spread the floor. Adebayo hasn't quite spread his game to the 3-point line like Myles Turner has in the past few years, but his mid-range game has improved greatly and his passing gifts could give Team USA a very different look.
