Jimmy Butler joined the Miami Heat as part of a four-team deal in July, leaving the Philadelphia 76ers. It was a decision that was met with a certain level of scrutiny, which he believes was disrespectful.
“Mother——s act like I’m not a good basketball player,” Butler told Yahoo Sports. “Like for real. Just think about that. Like I can’t come in and make a huge difference. I’m not going to say ‘carry a team’ because nobody can do it by themselves and I mean that. I’m not putting it all on myself, but I know what I’m capable of. I know what I bring to any and all situations, and the group of guys that we have is the group of guys that I want to play with.”
Butler, who's accepted a leadership role with Miami, went on to praise his teammates. The four-time All-Star believes the Heat are only going to get better:
“When I look down the line and as we're talking about it as an organization on this roster, I know what these guys are capable of,” Butler added. “These guys are built like me. We’re one in the same and so they’re only going to get better and they’re not going to get complacent. This is me. I see myself in every one of these guys around this locker room.”
Butler's decision to join the Heat seems to be paying off thus far, as he and the team are playing well. In fact, they're 5-1 through their first six games of this season, which ties best six-game start in franchise history. Several of their victories have come in impressive fashion.
In Sunday's blowout win over the Houston Rockets (129-100), Butler racked up 18 points and dished out nine assists. James Johnson added 17 in his season debut. The assist differential was glaring, as Miami had 38 dimes to Houston's 19. After one quarter of play, the Heat were out in front by 32 points, which was third-highest point differential after one frame of play, according to ESPN.
Butler's decision to join the Heat may have ruffled a few feathers, but it seems as though it was the right call. Let's see if they can maintain this level of play going forward.
