New Orleans Pelicans big man DeMarcus Cousins returned to his old stomping ground in Sacramento Thursday night and had a night to remember. Cousins carried the team to a 114-106 win by putting up a monster stat line of 41 points on 14-of-25 shooting from the field, 23 rebounds, and six assists. He also made 10 of his 12 attempts from the charity stripe and went 3-of-5 from deep.

If you get the feeling that the numbers Boogie had in laying waste to his old team is something historic, it’s because that it is. According to NBA stats, it was the first time since 1976 that someone managed to record 40-plus points, 20-plus rebounds, and six-plus assists, while shooting at least 50 percent from the field in a game. The last man to do it before Cousins was Hall of Famer Bob McAdoo.

DeMarcus Cousins got the responsibility of doing just about everything for the Pelicans against his former team because teammate Anthony Davis was sidelined with a knee injury.

Through five games this season, Cousins is averaging a team-best 33.0 points, 14.2 rebounds, and 4.8 assists.

Cousins’ performance on Thursday sends a strong message to the Cleveland Cavaliers, whom the Pelicans will play next this Saturday at home.
