The Carolina Hurricanes are not tucking their tails and packing it in after a very disappointing postseason. Instead, they are doubling down to try and bring the Stanley Cup to Carolina. According to Hockey Insider Frank Seravalli, the Hurricanes have acquired Max Pacioretty and Dylan Coghlan in a cost-cutting move for Las Vegas, as the Golden Knights will receive future considerations.

The Golden Knights had to rid themselves of more salary after the trade for Jack Eichel.

Earlier Wednesday, the Hurricanes traded for superstar defenseman Brent Burns. They also landed center man Lane Pederson in the deal. Burns is a massive get but clearly the Hurricanes brass was not satisfied.

Now the Hurricanes have added an elite goal scorer. Pacioretty, the 34-year-old left winger, scored 19 goals and 37 points in just 39 games played last season for the Golden Knights. He was a first-round pick by the Montreal Canadiens in 2007 and eventually was named captain there in 2015.

Pacioretty has 323 career goals and 642 points over the course of his career.

The Hurricanes were eliminated by the New York Rangers in seven games during the second round of the playoffs. Game 7 was their only home loss from either round. However, they also did not win a single road game in the playoffs, going 0-6 away from Raleigh, North Carolina.

The Eastern Conference is as deep as it has arguably ever been. The Washington Capitals finished as the eighth seed last season with 100 points. So, even with a stacked roster, winning the Stanley Cup will once again prove to be the most difficult thing in sports.
