If you are to believe everything you read, Muhammad Wilkerson will soon no longer be a member of the New York Jets.

According to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News, a team source said “He’s gone,” after yet another incident that happened last week.

Earlier last week, according to Connor Hughes of NJ.com, Wilkerson “has regularly shown up late to team’s morning meetings this season,” and has missed some altogether. Obviously, this is not an ideal way to go about business.

Here is where things get tricky, even if the Jets truly want to move on from him.

Muhammad Wilkerson is only two years into the five-year, $86 million contract he signed in 2016. That deal, it is worth noting, contained $36.75 million in guarantees.

Without restructuring that deal, which seems near impossible, it will be incredibly hard to trade him. This is especially so now that other teams in the National Football League know that New York wants to be rid of him. Why bother give up any assets if you could just get him on the waiver wire?

As for the semantics of a potential cutting:

If New York cuts him before the third day of the league year in March, the Jets could avoid guaranteeing his 2018 salary of $16.75 million. If so, they would still take a $9 million dead money hit, but would clear $11 million in cap room. If the Jets designated him a post-June 1 cut, they’d clear $17 million in room with a $3 million dead money hit.

No Mo … Wilkerson in New York?
