Former Dallas Cowboys tight end Jason Witten made his debut on the Monday Night Football booth to cover the New York Jets and the Washington Redskins. Obviously, that meant talking a bit about highly-touted Jets rookie quarterback Sam Darnold.

During his breakdown of Darnold prior to the game, Witten compared the rookie QB to none other than his old Cowboys teammate, Tony Romo.

Witten pointed out three key traits he saw in Darnold that reminded him of Romo: mobility, poise in the pocket, and the ability to improvise.

Of course, Witten isn't the first person to make this comparison. Others saw the similarities between the two QBs prior to the draft. And Darnold has shown bits of those qualities over his first two preseason appearances for the Jets.

His touchdown against the Atlanta Falcons last week looked particularly Romo-esque. After dropping back a few steps, he quickly stepped out of the pocket and made a terrific throw on the run to Charles Johnson in the end zone.

Darnold wasn’t quite as impressive as he got the start against the Redskins, though. He went 8-of-11 for 62 yards with an interception as the Jets ended up losing 15-13.

Still, Darnold has performed well enough thus far to think he’s likely going to win the starting quarterback job for Week 1 against the Lions, which will once again be on ESPN with Witten on the call. Hopefully for the Jets, Darnold comes up with a performance that will remind Witten a lot more of his former Cowboys teammate in a good way.
