One of the biggest questions among New York Jets fans during the offseason was whether they would see another quarterback compete with Sam Darnold for the QB1 spot. Darnold wasn't terrible in 2019, but his performance could easily warrant bringing in another pass-caller as competition.

However, Adam Gase seems to be trusting his young quarterback as he brought back career backup David Fales on Tuesday. As shared by ESPN's Adam Schefter, this move practically guarantees that Darnold will still be the team's first-choice quarterback for the 2020 season.

Fales has served as a capable backup for three NFL teams in his four-year stint, and it seems like it's not going to end any time soon. While he's only had a couple of games to his name, he's shown that he's a quality quarterback who can serve as a reliable backup.

The question now lies on whether Darnold can step up his game compared to last season. His numbers compared to his first year didn't vary much, but it seems like he's getting the hang of playing with the best football players in the world.

Like his rookie season, he's only made 13 starts in 2019. However, his 3,024 passing yards, 19 touchdowns and 13 interceptions were slight improvements in comparison to his rookie campaign. There are still growing pains when it comes to his play, but he's steadily becoming the reliable passer that the Jets have yearned for.

The coming season also promises a lot to the Jets after Tom Brady's departure from the New England Patriots. The AFC East is now wide open, and it's up to Darnold to steer the Jets to a playoff spot.

The Jets have the talent to compete. Whether they reach the playoffs with Darnold in the pocket is still a question mark, though.
