The New York Jets could find themselves in a position where they could select a quarterback in the 2021 NFL Draft, which would make Sam Darnold available via trade. While the Jets continue to struggle, NFL executives don't believe New York would get a first-round pick for Darnold if he were to be traded.

In speaking to ESPN's Adam Schefter, an executive believes Darnold's trade value depends on how he performs to end the season.

“I don't think they'd get a [first-round pick] for Sam, but it also depends what he puts on tape the rest of the year,” one general manager told ESPN. “The problem is, [Darnold] is struggling with his accuracy, his durability — so they're in a tough spot. And if everyone knows the Jets are taking a quarterback, then they won't get as much back.”

Heading into Sunday's game versus the Arizona Cardinals, the Jets have an 0-4 record and are the team many believe will hold the No. 1 overall pick in next year's draft. Not to mention, Darnold is going to miss the team's Week 5 contest with a shoulder injury he suffered in Week 4.

Given that, Darnold won't be able to improve his value further this week as he is sidelined with an injury. Also, as the executive points out, if everyone knows the Jets are going to take a quarterback, then his value takes another hit.

The Adam Gase project has been a failure thus far in New York and his shortcomings could lead to Darnold being moved elsewhere this offseason. In the event that the Jets do make Darnold available, it may be tough for them to get a first-round selection in return.
