The Sacramento Kings will be keeping the head coach that has ushered in a promising era of playoff contention for the next few years. The Kings have reportedly agreed to a $30 million contract extension with head coach Mike Brown, according to Shams Charania of The Athletic

This new contract presents the Kings head coach with a significant raise; according to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, he'll be receiving a $4 million raise on the final year left of his current deal (taking him from $4.5 million to $8.5 million) and then he'll be making $8.5 million per annum for the 2025-26 and 2026-27 seasons.

Perhaps there are incentives in Mike Brown's contract that could take the value of his contract to $30 million, as the figures presented by Wojnarowski don't quite add up yet. More details regarding the contract extension should come out in the following days.

Keeping Brown was one of the Kings' most pressing orders of business during the 2024 offseason. The veteran head coach has worked wonders for a Kings franchise that has been one of, if not the worst in the NBA over the course of the past 20 years. With Brown helming the team, the Kings have won 94 games over the past two seasons, including a Pacific Division crown in 2023.

Brown, for his efforts, won Coach of the Year in 2023 for helping turn things around for the Kings. Maintaining continuity is a must if they were to continue making some noise in the Western Conference, and locking down his services for the next three years will help in that regard, especially in a loaded Western Conference.

Mike Brown gets his much-deserved payday from the Kings

Negotiations regarding a contract extension between Mike Brown and the Kings didn't exactly look smooth. Just last week, Brown and the Kings reportedly “tabled talks” on a new deal after there remained a huge gulf between the two parties. Moreover, there were rumors that Brown was on the hot seat after the Kings declined this past season by failing to make the playoffs after falling short in the play-in tournament.

But now, Brown's standing within the Kings franchise appears to be safe, as the team continues to have trust in the man who helped turn the team into one of the most entertaining outfits in the association. Brown has leaned into his best players' identity, installing a dribble handoff heavy offense that makes the most of Domantas Sabonis and De'Aaron Fox's skillsets.

Moreover, Brown has instructed the Kings to play at such a breakneck pace, utilizing the top-tier speed of Fox and Malik Monk. Sacramento had the best offense in the NBA during the 2022-23 season, a testament to the effectiveness of Brown's coaching.

The 2023-24 season, however, saw a major decline in the Kings' offensive production. They fell all the way down to 13th on the scoring ladder, as they scored 2.4 fewer points per 100 possessions this past season. They were more resolute defensively, but the gleam of the beam seems to have waned over the course of a year.

Still, the last thing the Kings would want to do is rock the boat too much. In 2014, the Kings notoriously canned Michael Malone after leading the team to a promising start — a decision that remains confounding to this day. Mike Brown has done nothing but change the culture of a Kings franchise that has gotten accustomed to losing basketball, and now he will be reaping the financial rewards of his hard work.
