It appears one of the most famous franchises in sports, the New York Knicks could be getting a new owner in the near future thanks to James Dolan's current moves.

The Madison Square Garden stock prices have risen since Wednesday when team owner and CEO of the Madison Square Garden James Dolan said he is considering making the Knicks and the New York Rangers into their own company. Currently, they are all under the Madison Square Garden umbrella.

According to Crain's New York:

“Late Wednesday Dolan announced he was exploring a spin-off that would separate the Knicks and the Rangers from the rest of Madison Square Garden. While Dolan would remain in charge of the teams, at least at first, putting them together in a separate public company would offer him the chance to whittle down his stake easily if he chooses.”

Dolan has said that he wants to get more involved with the music side of the entertainment industry, and getting away from the Knicks and Rangers would allow him to do that. Dolan inherited the team from his families business, so he didn't have a ton of choice in owning the Knicks.

It could still be a while off before he decides to sell the team, but by splitting the two companies up, it would make it a lot easier when he decides to start selling off his shares of the team.

James Dolan has made some interesting choices as the owner of the Knicks, and it might be better in the long run that the franchise does get a new man in charge of the franchise.
