The New York Knicks' once-promising point guard situation is back to being a mess. Derrick Rose's return from an ankle injury that has sidelined him since December was supposed to be a remedy for it.

That remedy is no longer on the table. The Knicks announced that Rose, who just returned to practice this week, will now undergo a procedure on his right ankle and will be out indefinitely.

In 26 games this season, Rose was averaging 12.0 points and 4.0 assists while shooting 44.5 percent from the field and 40.2 percent from deep. He was listed as doubtful for the Knicks' game against the Miami Heat tonight, a sign that he was making progress. Unfortunately for him and the team, he may miss the remainder of the season.

The Knicks had a huge need for Rose following their mutual decision with Kemba Walker to bench him for the rest of the season. Rose was a huge reason for their success last season and the team was playing decent when he was healthy this year. Now, the Knicks are in even more danger of missing the playoffs.

New York is down to just Alec Burks, Immanuel Quickley and rookie/G League assignee Miles McBride under the point guard spot on the depth chart. The first two have disappointed this season and McBride, who is playing well in the G League, has only played a handful of minutes over 21 appearances this season.
