Former New York Knicks head coach David Fizdale says the team has a future star in rookie small forward RJ Barrett.

Despite being fired by the Knicks, Fizdale believes the franchise is in good hands with Barrett leading the charge.

“There’s one in the organization for sure and I think that’s RJ Barrett. I think RJ Barrett embodies the type of player who can play in New York City. Just straight hard worker, tough, talented, doesn’t get rattled, knows how to deal with the press and all the of the lights and things like that,” David Fizdale said on ESPN Radio, via The New York Daily News.

“He can weather the ups and downs. He doesn’t get too high or too low on himself. I think the biggest thing right now … Do they want to guys to keep growing, or do they really want to spend that money on playoff players and really try and push it?”

Before the 2019-20 season was suspended, Barrett was averaging 14.3 points, 5.0 rebounds and 2.6 assists for the Knicks. The lefty was also shooting 40.2 percent from the field, 32.0 percent from beyond the arc and 61.4 percent from the free-throw line.

The Knicks selected Barrett with the third overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft out of Duke. New York is hoping Fizdale is right and RJ will turn into a superstar for the team sooner rather than later.

The 2012-13 season was the last time the Knicks had a winning record and made the playoffs. The only way the organization is going to become a winner again is if Barrett or one of the other youngsters on the team turns into an alpha.
