With the league's highest cap space entering the 2021-2022 season, the New York Knicks have set their eyes on possibly acquiring point guard Dennis Schroeder. And, apparently, they've had their eyes locked on the Los Angeles Lakers point guard for quite some time now.
According to Marc Berman of the New York Post, while the team was busy securing a trip to the 2021 playoffs, the New York front office intensely scouted the 27-year-old all of last season to make sure he could be a good fit for the Knicks' backcourt. Schroeder's name has been one of the ones that have been popping in and out trade rumors for the past few months as the German-born playmaker enters free agency this summer.
Knicks president Leon Rose is currently sitting on a league-high of $53 million in total cap space and Schroeder, alongside other hot targets like Kyle Lowry of the Toronto Raptors and Lonzo Ball of the New Orleans Pelicans, could potentially be at the forefront of a busy summer in the Big Apple.
If the rumors are indeed true, New York will be Schroeder's third team in four seasons. After starting his career with the Atlanta Hawks, the point guard had two solid seasons with the Oklahoma City Thunder before signing with the Lakers last season. Unfortunately, Schroeder's time in LA was rather disappointing as it seems as though he never fit well under head coach Frank Vogel's system.
In his time in LA as well as OKC, we've seen what Schroeder is capable of, and, having a reliable option at the point should bode well for the Knicks as they try to book a return trip to the 2022 NBA playoffs.
