The New York Knicks went a much different direction in free agency after missing out on Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving. Rather than spend their hordes of cap space on second-tier free agents, the Knicks signed a series of young veterans to short-term contracts that preserve their financial flexibility going forward.

With that major shift in approach, of course, comes a major change in expectations for New York's hopes of contending in 2019-20. The Knicks, one of the youngest teams in the NBA, will be competing for lottery balls again next season rather than the Larry O'Brien Trophy – a reality that apparently hasn't tempered their interest in signing the league's oldest player.

According to Marc Berman of the New York Post, New York is considering using its final roster spot on Vince Carter.

As of Wednesday, the Knicks still held $4 million of cap space and then a $4.8 room exception. They had only one spot left, though, on their 15-man roster. Lance Thomas is the favorite, as The Post reported, to fill the final spot. Vince Carter has also been mentioned. The Knicks could sign two players and cut one after a training camp battle.

Carter averaged 7.4 points and 2.6 rebounds in 17.4 minutes per game for the Atlanta Hawks last season. The 42-year-old announced his plans to play one final season earlier in the offseason, but remains unsigned.

Carter showed last year that he's not only comfortable playing the role of a veteran mentor for a rebuilding team, but relishes the opportunity. But considering he's still without a championship ring entering his NBA swan song, Carter might be more inclined to play for a contender like the Los Angeles Lakers than the Knicks.
