The Seattle Kraken made franchise history on Tuesday, as they announced their first ever re-signing of a restricted free agent in the franchises young history. The Kraken re-signed forward Jared McCann to a five-year, $25 million contract, according to NHL.com. McCann leads the Kraken in goals and points, with 21 and 33 respectively.

Those numbers don't stand out as spectacular, but for a brand new franchise trying to make in-roads, he has at least been on shining point in an otherwise disappointing first season.

Seattle is currently 17-36-5 entering Tuesday night. The Kraken's 39 points rank ahead of only the Montreal Canadiens and Arizona Coyotes in the league.

McCann was set to become a restricted free agent after the season. But Seattle was able to lock him up long-term. That will allow him to move forward and focus on one thing, hockey.

“That's a lot of pressure off my shoulders… Now I can just focus on playing hockey. It's a huge honor to get this deal and to be a part of the future… It happened pretty quickly. We talked for a couple of weeks and kind of got something rolling. I'm very happy with how it came out. I really wanted some term to be able to be in a place for a while. They were more than accommodating for that fact, so it's great.”

McCann was selected by the Vancouver Canucks with the 24th overall pick in the 2014 NHL Draft. He has spent time with the Canucks, Panthers, Penguins and now Kraken. His 21 goals this season are a career-high for the 25-year-old.
