Los Angeles Lakers center Dwight Howard told reporters on a conference call that the mother of his six-year-old son died during the coronavirus pandemic nearly six weeks ago.

Howard said the tragic death wasn't related to COVID-19, but she was dealing with epilepsy:

Howard was able to make it to the funeral:

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Dwight Howard and his family. This has certainly been a tough time for everyone around the world. The Lakers big man and his family surely have the support of the NBA community.

The 2019-20 NBA season was suspended on March 11 after Utah Jazz All-Star center Rudy Gobert tested positive for COVID-19. It is unclear if the 2019-20 season will be resumed.

Howard appeared in 62 games for the Lakers before the season was put to a halt. He was averaging 7.5 points and 7.4 rebounds off the bench while shooting 73.2 percent from the field.

The Lakers had the top record in the Western Conference standings at 49-14. Howard has been working out in preparation for the possible return of the NBA season.
