The day Los Angeles Lakers legend Kobe Bryant gets his two jerseys retired is inching closer.
On Dec. 18, the collective basketball world will witness the moment, one which has never happened in the history of the sports and probably will never happen.
In advance of that historic day, Bryant spoke to Serena Winters of Lakers Nation for an exclusive question and answer session, and he touched on a variety of topics.
One of the more intriguing ones came when Winters asked Bryant when he first had the inkling that his jersey could one day be retired by the team. Bryant pointed to one of the most iconic moments in NBA history.
I’d say, after the season I scored 81, that’s when I would say I thought it’s probably going up there now. That’s when I felt like, okay, my jersey is going to get retired.
Bryant hit plenty of milestones during his career. Winning five championships with the Lakers would've probably been enough to secure a jersey retirement.
But when he scored 81 points in on Jan. 22, 2006, he didn't only make Lakers history; he made NBA history as being the only player ever to get closest to Wilt Chamberlain's 100-point game.
If a feat like that doesn't get a player his jersey retired, it's to think of what would.
