Two former NBA All-Stars, Rajon Rondo and DeAndre Jordan, could be potential buyout additions for the Los Angeles Lakers at some point in the 2021-22 season.

On Thursday, ESPN's Ramona Shelburne said on the “Mason & Ireland” show that Rondo is a strong candidate to return to Los Angeles should he be bought out by the Memphis Grizzlies. Shelburne (who is as plugged into the Lakers as any reporter) also mentioned Jordan as an option for L.A., should he be bought out by the Brooklyn Nets.

Rondo played an integral role — on the court, in the locker room, and in film study — in the Lakers' run to the 2020 NBA championship in the bubble. In that postseason, Playoff Rondo averaged 8.9 points, 6.6 assists, 4.3 rebounds, 1.4 steals, and shot 40% from 3-point range. His leadership and intelligence were immeasurable.

Overall, Rondo averaged 8.1 points, 6.5 assists, and 4.1 rebounds over two seasons with the Lakers.

Frank Vogel, LeBron James, and Anthony Davis — like many others — have often lauded Rondo's basketball IQ. James and Rondo exchanged heartfelt appreciation messages after Rondo signed with the Atlanta Hawks in November of 2020.

“We really miss him around here,” Vogel said in February. “He was a big part of what we did last year, a big part of our culture and he’s definitely missed.”

The 35-year old was traded to the Los Angeles Clippers midway through the 2020-21 season and was recently dealt to Memphis for Eric Bledsoe. The youthful Grizzlies currently have 19 players on their roster, making Rondo a logical buyout candidate.

The Lakers have three open roster spots. They are reportedly looking to fill two spots before the season and reserve one for a buyout addition, though they could always alter those intentions. L.A. still wants to add another true point guard.

Jordan, 32, put up 7.5 points and 7.5 rebounds in 57 appearances for the Nets in 2020-21, though his role has shifted more toward “chemist” rather than “difference-making center” at this stage of his career.

The Athletic's Nets reporter, Alex Schiffer, wrote that he would be surprised if Jordan is still with Brooklyn when training camp opens. The team has shopped him throughout the summer.
