It's no secret that Frank Vogel is currently sitting on one of the hottest coaching seats in the entire NBA. Apart from Russell Westbrook, Vogel has been one of the biggest scapegoats for the Los Angeles Lakers in what has been a truly disappointing season for this squad. As such, it isn't a surprise that Vogel's job security has been put into question for pretty much the entire seaosn.

As it turns out, there is already one potential candidate that is now being linked to the Lakers as a potential replacement for Vogel. According to NBA insider Marc Stein, Utah Jazz head coach Quin Snyder could be in the running as the next man at the helm in Hollywood:

As covered in my previous This Week In Basketball column, Snyder has been increasingly mentioned as a potential target for San Antonio to succeed Gregg Popovich. I've likewise heard Snyder's name posed as a probable Los Angeles Lakers candidate should the Lakers and Frank Vogel part ways after what has been a nightmare season in Hollywood.

It is worth noting that at this point, Snyder to the Lakers is nothing more than a rumor. There are so many factors that will come into play here, with the most significant one being Vogel's future with the Lakers. LA has been terrible this season and there's no denying that Vogel has to take a certain level of blame for the same. However, to pin this all on him would be downright unfair. Let's not forget that this man is just two years removed from leading the Lakers to their first NBA title in 10 years. Vogel may be on the hot seat, but this doesn't necessarily mean that the Lakers are going to fire him.

Moreover, it is clear that Snyder is a wanted man. He's already been rumored to be the leading candidate to replace Gregg Popovich once the San Antonio Spurs legend finally retires. We still don't know when Pop will decide to hang it up, but San Antonio is reportedly already considering Snyder as his successor. Popovich is the most esteemed coach in the NBA today and it goes without saying that taking over his position once he retires would be an ultimate honor for any coach in the league.

Another important thing to note here is Utah's willingness to part ways with Snyder. At the moment, it remains unclear how many more years Snyder has on his current deal with the Jazz. All we know is that in 2019, Snyder signed a multi-year extension with the team. Nevertheless, according to Stein, it appears that talks for another extension have not been productive between Utah and Snyder:

In discussions with numerous officials from rival teams in recent weeks, I've heard questions raised repeatedly about how much longer Snyder, now in his eighth season in Utah, will remain there.

NBA coaching sources nonetheless insist that Utah has been unsuccessful in its attempts to extend Snyder's contract further, leading to the belief that the coach tied for the league's third-longest active coaching tenure alongside Golden State's Steve Kerr might be more gettable than advertised.

It has now become unlikely that the Lakers decide to fire Vogel before the season ends. The regular season is winding down and with LA still in playoff contention, a major coaching change probably isn't an ideal route for them at the moment. If the Lakers actually want to pull the plug on Vogel then this is likely going to happen in the offseason.

Snyder has established himself as one of the top coaches in the NBA, but it is also true that he hasn't found ultimate success with the Jazz. Utah had the best regular-season record in the league last season, but they bowed out in the playoffs in the second round to the Los Angeles Clippers. Under Snyder, the Jazz have failed to go past the second round in the postseason.

It's likely that the Jazz still want to keep Snyder but the question is, at what price? The 55-year-old's stature in the NBA puts him in a position to demand a substantial annual income. The fact that teams like the Lakers and the Spurs are being linked to him only puts Snyder in a better bargaining position. Will the Jazz be willing to break the bank for Snyder given his track record in Utah? It's hard to tell at this point. One thing we can say for sure is that it's going to be a very interesting offseason for both Quin Snyder and the Utah Jazz organization.
