The Detroit Lions just can't stay out of their own way.

Late in the first quarter of his team's Week 4 matchup with the Chicago Bears, Lions quarterback Jared Goff, in shotgun, took two steps toward the line of scrimmage to point out potential blitzers to his offensive line or call an audible. Perhaps spooked by noise from a raucous Soldier Field crowd, though, Detroit center Frank Ragnow mistakenly snapped the ball, hitting Goff in the groin and giving the Bears a crucial red-zone turnover.

Yikes.

That ridiculous mistake basically amounts to more of the same for the long-suffering Lions. They entered Sunday's action 0-3, with little hope of ending the franchise's four-year playoff drought.

Making matters even more frustrating for Detroit fans is the success former franchise quarterback Matthew Stafford is enjoying with the undefeated Los Angeles Rams. Goff, by contrast, had yet to lift his team to victory despite solid box-score numbers, further evidence of inherent limitations in his game that ended his tenure with the Rams. Stafford and Goff, remember, were traded for one another in January, with Los Angeles also sending two first-round picks and a third-round pick to the Lions.

Needless to say, that's a price the Rams were happy to pay. Almost a quarter of the way through the 2021 season, it's certainly not looking like a deal that's made the Lions better, either.
