The Detroit Lions grabbed a huge win over the Carolina Panthers on Sunday afternoon that has put them back on track toward competing for the playoffs.

However, it has come at a bit of a cost with standout rookie running back Kerryon Johnson suffering a sprained knee in the contest. According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, it is an injury that will not require surgery but is something that will make his status week to week.

It is a major bullet dodged by the Lions as there was some concern that it could have been much worse with potential problems with his ACL. Instead, Johnson could miss a game or two just for precautionary reasons that could see him be out of action for Thursday's game on Thanksgiving day against the Chicago Bears due to the quick turnaround over the next few days.

This puts him a tough position of having to prepare himself to take the field for the contest with only a couple of days to prepare for the game and prove that he is able to play that short of time since suffering a sprained knee. There are just too many variables in the way for him to be able to take the field that quickly from this type of injury. The risk of him suffering a major injury for the sake of playing one game may be too big of a risk to take with their promising running back.

Johnson has quickly taken over as the workhorse option out of the backfield as he has shown to be a dynamic asset in both the running and passing game. He is currently ninth in the league with 641 rushing yards and three touchdowns along with 32 receptions for 213 receiving yards and a touchdown. This includes notching a pair of 100 rushing yard performances while scoring a touchdown in the last two games.
