The Detroit Lions have welcomed a number of new faces to the team this offseason. However, it appears they have wasted no time in finding a role for running back LeGarrette Blount.

Blount has proven to be a viable option in the backfield throughout his career. According to Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press, he will begin the 2018 NFL season as Detroit's goal-line back:

The Lions signed Blount to be a 250-pound plowhorse who can help in short-yardage and goal-line situations, but it’s interesting that, after scoring 18 touchdowns in 2016, he converted 8 of 15 runs (53 percent) with 1 yard to go (i.e., third-and-1) for the Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles last year, according to Sharp Football.

The report should come as no surprise. Even during his down years, Blount's skill set has always been that of a powerhouse running back. Needless to say, he brings an edge that the Lions have not have in the backfield for quite some time.

Needless to say, a power back is just what Detroit needs to help shake things up in the run game. The Lions already have two scatbacks in Ameer Abdullah and Theo Riddick that they will attempt to get in space. Meanwhile, they will turn to Blount for the short-yardage situations.

The veteran is coming off a bit of a down season with the Philadelphia Eagles. He finished the 2017 campaign with 766 yards and just two touchdowns in a crowded Eagles' backfield. However, he should have no problem resuming his role as the power back in Detroit.
