The Detroit Lions have a new head coach in former New England Patriots defensive coordinator Matt Patricia. However, he might not be the only Pat who could be calling Detroit home next season.

According to Ben Volin of the Boston Globe, the Lions will likely make a push to acquire the services of Patriots running back Dion Lewis:

The Lions have featured a pass-heavy attack for some time now behind quarterback Matthew Stafford. However, general manager Bob Quinn has made it clear that Detroit will try to find more balance in their offense moving forward. In order to do so, they will need to find a back capable of helping transform the run game.

The interest in Lewis should come as no surprise considering Detroit's affinity for scat-backs. Furthermore, his familiarity with Patricia could help spur his decision to join the Lions in free agency.

Lewis managed to emerge as the primary workhorse in a crowded Patriots' backfield last season and enjoyed the best year of his career by far after rushing for 896 yards and six touchdowns. He also flexed his receiving prowess with 32 receptions for 214 yards and three touchdowns.

That said, it would not make much sense to bring in another player who fits the same mold as Ameer Abdullah and Theo Riddick. Both backs possess dynamic skill sets, although their current 1-2 punch has lacked the pop Detroit was hoping it would have. As a result, they could be looking to find an every-down back to take over the run game.
