After a Hall of Fame career that spanned six decades as a player, head coach and front office executive, Glen Sather, Senior Advisor to the Owner and Athletic Governor, announced that he is retiring from his position with the New York Rangers, the team said in a press release.
“Having the opportunity to be associated with the National Hockey League, and specifically the New York Rangers and Edmonton Oilers, has been one of the great privileges of my life,” Glen Sather said, via the Rangers. “I want to thank Jim Dolan for Giving me the chance to work for the Rangers 24 years ago and for his consistent guidance and friendship. I want to thank everyone in the Rangers organization for their dedication and pursuit of excellence throughout the years, as well as the family atmosphere they helped create. I would also like to thank the great Rangers fans for their passion and loyalty. This experience is something I will always treasure.”
Sather has been involved with the Rangers for 24 years, and was a part of building many successful teams in that span, but never got over the hump to win a Stanley Cup. He had taken a step back in recent memory, but now, this move makes it clear that Chris Drury, current Rangers president and general manager, is in full control of the direction of the franchise. Chris Drury spoke in the Rangers' press release on Sather's retirement.
“I would like to congratulate Glen on his tremendous career,” Drury said, via the Rangers' “I will forever be grateful to Glen for giving me the opportunity to play for the Rangers, and I was so fortunate to lean on him for guidance as I began my own career in the front office. I wish Glen — along with Ann and the entire Sather family — best of luck in the next chapter of their lives.
Sather oversaw a lot of successful teams with the Rangers, and Drury hopes to continue that success as Sather leaves the organization. There are some potentially tough decisions approaching this summer as Drury tries to turn the Rangers into a Stanley Cup winner.

After losing to the Florida Panthers in the Eastern Conference Finals this season, there are a few needs that stick out for the Rangers. The main one is a top six right winger to play alongside Mika Zibanejad and Chris Kreider, but a puck-moving defenseman is on the list as well.
There are plenty of rumors surrounding the type of top six winger New York is targeting, and there has been some talk about signing Jake Guentzel, despite the fact that he will get a big contract and the Rangers do not have much cap flexibility.
It will be interesting to see if Drury has a trade up his sleeve this coming week during the NHL Draft to free up some cap space and make significant upgrades.
