Even after leaving his former team and signing with the Memphis Grizzlies on a four-year, $94 million contract in this year's free agency, Chandler Parsons still maintains a good relationship with Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban,
During a recent appearance on 105.3 FM The Fan's Ben and Skin Show,the charismatic owner talked about what the team did to keep Parsons in Dallas and how they still communicate:
“We talked about it after he signed with Memphis. We exchanged texts and stayed friends and committed to stay friends. I like him a lot but there were other things other than basketball that went into the decision. And Chandler was aware of them and he made his decision.
“We gave him some options and he went in a different direction. That was his choice and I respect it and again, I think he's a great guy and I hope he has a great season other than the four games we play him.”
There were a lot of things the team was considering during the start of the summer, but Dallas was in high hopes of landing a big name free agent like Hassan Whiteside orMike Conley. Their resulting reluctance to offer Parsons a max deal after he did not pick up his player option for next season ultimately led to his departure.
One of the reasons they did not offer the 27 year old a new contract was the condition of his right knee. The injury caused Parsons not to complete each of the past two seasons with the Mavs. The team thus had apprehensions if he'd be able to stay healthy in the future.
Now that Parsons will star with the Grizzlies, he'll have a chance to prove that he's still one of the better small forwards in the league. He just needs to be consistent with his performance in the future and, vitally, not get injured. Having a fresh start with his new team will definitely be beneficial for Parsons.
For what it's worth, even if Parsons never plays in Texas again, he knows he has not burned any bridges with his former boss.
