Video game music rights company, Materia Collective, expressed their disappointment on the Game Awards. They announced on Twitter the lack of recognition and screen time for video game music composers.
We are disappointed that @thegameawards pushed Best Score and Music to the preshow, did not credit creators and composers, and did not play representative music. Creators of videogame music deserve better than a passing 59-second mention. #TheGameAwards https://t.co/CwxvTBmXvS

They criticized the decision to place the Best Score and Music segment as part of the preshow.
Final Fantasy VII remake won the award over Hades, Ori and the Will of the Wisps, Doom Eternal, and The Last of Us Part II. Renowned video game music artists, Nobuo Uematsu, Masashi Hamauzu, and Mitsuto Suzuki composed the game's soundtrack. They edged other noteworthy composers Darren Korb, Gareth Coker, Mick Gordon, and Academy Award winner Gustavo Santaolalla.
Yet even if they managed to win against the best that the gaming industry had to offer, their victory was only limited to a one minute mention. Their music wasn't even used during the presentation.
Materia eventually followed up, stating their advocacy in defending the value of video game composers.
Hi π Materia is a videogame music group. This is our entire life. We care a ton about representation, and seeing #gameaudio creators sidelined doesn't sit right by us. Music is not an afterthought.

This wasn't the first time that the award received limited screen time as Materia Collective's retweet revealed that it likewise took place in last season's show.
The community have also expressed their disappointment on Twitter as well with some emphasizing on the importance of music in enhancing the video game experience.
The scores create the world of the game at least as much as the rendering engines do. They create tension, provide reward, and help to tell the story.
The music deserved so much more than this. https://t.co/5munDuXFRH

What a surprise. The Best Music category of #TheGameAwards has been shoved into the pre-show yet again⦠without even a cursory mention to the composers and creators who provide us with so much joy and emotional connection every time we boot up a game. https://t.co/1FOqn93efS
