Dallas Mavericks star Luka Doncic failed to lead his native Slovenia to a podium finish in the Tokyo Olympics, but that doesn't mean their run isn't successful. In fact for a team playing in their first Olympics, it was already a major accomplishment to finish fourth behind the more experienced teams and heavyweights.

The Mavs star understood that and took it to Twitter to share his appreciation for his Slovenia teammates and their memorable gold chase in the Olympics.

Luka Doncic and Slovenia were considered dark horse candidates for the gold medal in the men's basketball tournament, and they showed why after going undefeated in the group phase. They went on to take down Germany in the quarterfinals before losing a narrow 90-89 game to France in the semifinals.

The Mavs star tried his best to push Slovenia to a bronze finish against Australia in the third-place match. Unfortunately, his 22 points, eight rebounds and seven assists were not enough to power them over the Patty Mills-led Boomers.

Despite the heartbreak, Doncic definitely showed everyone that his Slovenia is on its way to becoming a basketball threat on the international stage.

After his sensational Olympics run, though, Doncic can now turn his focus to the Mavs as the team also try to contend for the NBA title with the 22-year-old leading the way.

Doncic is expected to sign his supermax rookie extension worth over $200 million this offseason, and the hopes are the Mavs can surround him with enough talent to be considered title contenders.
