If the 2019-20 season resumes in the summer, count Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban as someone who isn't in favor of going straight to the playoffs.

The Mavs boss believes players need multiple weeks to get their bodies in basketball shape again before competing in an environment such as the NBA playoffs.

“How much of an offseason do we need for the draft, workouts and guys to rest?” Mark Cuban said during an interview on ESPN 103.3 FM on Monday, via the Forth Worth Star-Telegram. “Worst-case — we kind of squished the schedule and started late July, early August. That’s just me speculating. Go play a few warm-up games to finish out the season and finalize playoff positioning, then play the playoffs.”

Cuban is once again correct in his assessment. The odds of a player getting seriously injured would skyrocket if the league cancels the rest of the regular season and proceeds to play postseason basketball without giving players ample time to work out to get their conditioning back.

Cuban's Mavs were in seventh place in the Western Conference standings before the season was suspended. Dallas hasn't won a playoff series since the 2011 championship over the Miami Heat.

While Cuban is eager to see Luka Doncic and Kristaps Porzingis make their postseason debuts for the Mavs, he is not going to jeopardize player safety.

NBA owners are hopeful of resuming the season in the summer and then possibly concluding it in September. There has been talk about the 2020-21 campaign starting on Christmas.

All of this, of course, is contingent on the coronavirus and if the pandemic dies down to where sports can resume.
