The Dallas Mavericks traded Kristaps Porzingis to the Washington Wizards at the deadline, getting Spencer Dinwiddie and Davis Bertans in return. Apparently, however, there was another team interested in the Latvian forward before eventually backing out: the Toronto Raptors.

According to NBA insider Marc Stein, the Mavs were already pessimistic about getting a deal done for Porzingis until two suitors in the Raptors and Wizards showed “serious” interest in the sharpshooting big man. Unfortunately for Dallas, Toronto didn't like the outlook on KP's health and stopped their pursuit, which led to Mark Cuban and company focusing on Washington to make a trade happen.

Toronto, league sources say, stepped away because of concerns about Porzingis' long-term health. The Wizards, sources say, went ahead with the trade on their end — to add to the bluntness — because they were as eager to ship out Spencer Dinwiddie and Dāvis Bertāns as the Mavericks were to move on from the idea that Porzingis could be the ideal co-star for Luka Doncic.

While it's unknown what the Raptors would have offered or offered the Mavs for Kristaps Porzingis, the departure of the big man undoubtedly creates a huge hole in the frontcourt for Dallas. They were able to find a backup scoring guard in Dinwiddie and added shooting with Bertans, but KP's interior defense is difficult to replace.

As for the Raptors, they made one trade deadline deal by sending Goran Dragic and a 2022 first-round pick to the San Antonio Spurs for Thaddeus Young, Drew Eubanks and a second-rounder. It's not KP, but they are assured they have a healthy veteran aiding their playoff bid.
