It's time to continue our MLB odds series with a Mets-Angels prediction and pick. Find out how to watch Mets-Angels.

The New York Mets have been one of the best teams in baseball over the past two months. They were sensational in June and July, completely transforming their season in the process. The Mets were 24-35 on the morning of June 3. They were a comically bad team, losing winnable games in the most brutal fashion. The bullpen was springing leaks. Edwin Diaz was struggling. J.D. Martinez looked washed up in big at-bats. The lineup was missing a spark. Every game seemed to deliver a new gut punch. The Mets weren't losing ordinary 5-2 games in which they never had a chance. The cruelty of the situation was that the Mets had games right there to win in the late innings and then tripped over themselves. It was a nightmare.

On June 3, the Mets' playoff odds were slim to none. Would this team find a way out of its downward spiral? The odds didn't seem good.

In New York's last 49 games, the Mets are 33-16. The players who were struggling — Diaz and Martinez — turned things around. Francisco Lindor was moved up in the batting order, and he started producing at a higher level. Mark Vientos and Francisco Alvarez have been tremendous in support of the stars. The starting pitching has been superb, with Sean Manaea reaching top form and Luis Severino recalling his best times with the Yankees from past years.

The Mets have 54 games left in their season. If they play them the way they have played these last 49 games, New York will definitely make the playoffs and might even challenge the Philadelphia Phillies for the N.L. East.

Mets-Angels Projected Starters

Paul Blackburn vs. Tyler Anderson

Paul Blackburn (4-2) has a 4.41 ERA. What an interesting betting plot point this is. Blackburn was a member of the Oakland Athletics the past several seasons. Now he is a Met, the result of a trade deadline deal. Guess whom he faced in his last start? Yes, the Angels. Where did he face the Halos? In Anaheim, where this game is being played. How many times can anyone recall one pitcher facing the same team in the same stadium in consecutive starts for two different teams? One other detail worth noting: Before Blackburn's last start against the Angels, he hadn't pitched at the big-league level in two and a half months due to injury. He is basically learning how to ride a bike again.

Last Start: Friday, July 26 vs the Los Angeles Angels: 5 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 2 HR, 1 BB, 2 K

2024 Road Splits: 5 starts, 25 IP, 27 H, 21 R, 7 HR, 5 BB, 21 K

Tyler Anderson (8-9) has a 2.96 ERA. He gave up three runs in the first inning of his last start a week ago. Then he settled down and pitched six scoreless innings. Anderson continues to be a solid starting pitcher. It's notable that no one grabbed him at the trade deadline. A sub-3 ERA lefty starter should have great value, but Anderson seemed to go entirely under the radar for deadline buyers. The Angels won't mind.

Last Start: Saturday, July 27 vs the Oakland Athletics: 7 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 1 HR, 1 BB, 10 K

2024 Home Splits: 12 starts, 72 IP, 64 H, 31 R, 10 HR, 28 BB, 52 K

Why The Mets Will Cover The Spread/Win

Paul Blackburn gets a second look at a not-very-good Angel lineup which struggled to score in two consecutive games against Colorado Rockies pitching on Wednesday and Thursday. The Mets are a far better team and are playing well. Don't overthink this.

Why The Angels Will Cover The Spread/Win

Paul Blackburn was rusty against the Angels last week, and the Halos now get another look at him. It might not be the best spot for Blackburn. Hitters being familiar with his release point in the same stadium should enable them to identify the spin of the ball. The Halos can pile up runs here, and they have Tyler Anderson, a better pitcher, on the mound to oppose him.

Final Mets-Angels Prediction & Pick

The Blackburn angle is a headache. Stay away from this game entirely.
