After Jonathan Smith was hired as the new Michigan State football coach, the program lost all of its quarterbacks to the transfer portal. Now it looks like Smith may have a familiar face under center.

After a year with Oregon State under Smith, freshman Aiden Chiles has entered the transfer portal and is expected to sign with Michigan State and his former coach, according to Brad Crawford of 24/7 Sports:

“Buy stock in QB Aidan Chiles now. The talented freshman just entered the portal and is expected to sign with Michigan State and his former coach, Jonathan Smith, as @247Sports‘ best player available”

Michigan State football had three quarterbacks on the roster last season – Noah Kim, Katin Houser and Sam Leavitt. All three entered the transfer portal after Smith's hiring.

The Spartans are in a wildly different spot than they were just two years ago when it looked like Michigan State had hit a home run with their Mel Tucker hire. Tucker beat Michigan and led the Spartans to an 11-2 finish in 2021 that included a New Years Six bowl win and signed a massive contract after that season for $95 million over 10 years.

But the 2022 season showed that his success was likely a fluke as Michigan State took a major step back after entering the season with high expectations.

Things only got worse in 2023. Tucker was fired earlier this year due to sexual assault allegations, and the Spartans limped through the rest of the season after that. Smith has ample experience rebuilding a program after his 5-year ascendence at Oregon State – now he needs to do the same for Michigan State football.
