The Los Angeles Lakers may not be championship contenders, but they're certainly a team that is getting better.

Just weeks after signing Luke Walton to be their next head coach, the Lakers received more good news on Tuesday night during the draft lottery—they won the No. 2 overall pick.

For those that weren't aware, the Lakers entered the lottery in danger of not having a lottery pick. If it had fallen out of the top three, the Philadelphia 76ers would have received the selection.

The No. 2 overall selection now opens up limitless possibilities for the franchise. They could opt to select Ben Simmons or Brandon Ingram with the pick, or they could decide to trade the selection to land a number of impact players that can help the team win now. General manager Mitch Kupchak seemed to be pondering what to do next as he chatted with reporters after the lottery:

Perhaps the most positive sign for the Lakers is the fact that they now have more assets than they did a year ago, something that Kupchak also acknowledged following the lottery:

This pick can also be used to entice future free agents into signing with Los Angeles. The Lakers will have over $60 million in cap space this upcoming offseason.

While the 2015-16 season was the worst in franchise history, things are starting to look up for Los Angeles as they look to become playoff contenders once again in 2016-17.
