Rafael Devers faces uncertainty regarding his long-term future with the Boston Red Sox, as he is under team control for a mere one more season. If it were up to Red Sox manager Alex Cora, Devers would stay put in Boston for years to come.
“I would love to manage him for as long as I manage,” Cora said on Saturday. “I would love to have him.
“The organization loves him. John (Henry) was here today, he hit two home runs. Smart individual.”
Devers and the Red Sox avoided arbitration earlier this week, as the two sides came to terms on an $11.2 million deal for the 2022 season.
As mentioned, Devers will become an unrestricted free agent after the 2023 season. Devers recently noted that Red Sox team officials have not offered him a contract extension deal, although he would be open to engaging in such talks during spring training.
Overall, Devers has opened up spring training play on a promising note, which includes posting a .417 batting average to go along with three home runs recorded.
Much attention sure will be centered on Boston’s infield this season, with Trevor Story now in the fold coupled with what could be another standout campaign from Devers.
