The Boston Red Sox shelling out a big contract for Trevor Story gives them a great player that can help them win right now. But it also provided them insurance if in-house All-Stars Xander Bogaerts and Rafael Devers can't agree to a contract extension with Boston.
MLB Network's Jon Heyman reported for the New York Post that the gaps between what Bogaerts and Devers want and what the team is willing to pay them are each around $100 million.
While the Yankees and star outfielder Aaron Judge were about $75 million apart in negotiations, sources suggest that figure is dwarfed by the seeming gap in talks between Red Sox and their two young stars — Xander Bogaerts and Rafael Devers.
Neither Red Sox star believed Boston’s offer was in the ballpark — or anywhere near it. In both cases the gap is likely $100 million, and maybe much more.
Devers is looking to land a deal worth $300 million and Bogaerts is likely looking at a figure in the same vicinity. Both players are deserving of the big bucks, as they are two of the best hitters at their respective positions. Boston has a path to World Series contention because of their star sluggers.
Boston fans may be getting deja vu watching the Red Sox struggle to sign the stars they developed. The same thing happened with Mookie Betts and he was ultimately traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers because of it. A Rafael Devers contract and Xander Bogaerts contract that make both stars happy should be at the front of every Boston fan's wish list as they look to make it deep into the playoffs again.
