If you're hoping for a quick resolution to Gerrit Cole's free agency, you should probably just sit back and relax.
According to Andy Martino of SNY, Cole's agent, Scott Boras, has indicated to teams that his client will not be signing until January at the earliest, unlike fellow right-handed ace Stephen Strasburg who is expected to make his decision sooner.
Cole will obviously have a host of suitors this winter, but the general consensus is that he will land with either the Los Angeles Angels or New York Yankees. Given that Cole is a Southern California native who grew up rooting for the Bronx Bombers, this does not come as a surprise.
The 29-year-old righty is coming off of a spectacular 2019 campaign with the Houston Astros in which he went 20-5 with a 2.50 ERA, allowing just 142 hits while racking up 326 strikeouts over 212.1 innings of work, making his second straight All-Star appearance.
Cole initially arrived in Houston in November 2017 after coming over in a trade with the Pittsburgh Pirates. His first season with the Astros was also brilliant, as he went 15-5 with a 2.88 ERA, surrendering 143 hits while fanning 276 hitters across 200.1 frames.
The Newport Beach, Ca. native was actually originally selected by the Yankees in the first round (28th pick overall) of the 2008 MLB Draft, but he opted to play collegiate baseball at UCLA instead. Then, three years later, he was chosen by the Pirates with the first overall pick.
Cole made his big-league debut in 2013, going 10-7 with a 3.22 ERA.
He was very good in Pittsburgh, earning an All-Star selection in 2016, but Cole did not really break out until joining the Astros.
