The New York Yankees and Brian Cashman have made the first big moves of their off-season, as they have churned the back-end of their roster by designating for assignment their once-promising prospect Clint Frazier and utility players Roughned Odor and Tyler Wade, as first reported by ESPN MLB Insider Jeff Passan.

All three players all struggled mightily in the 2021 season that saw the Yankees lose in the one-game wild-card playoff to their rivals, the Boston Red Sox. The sting of that loss has many Yankees fans clamoring for a stud offensive player from free agency like Carlos Correa or Corey Seager. The team has also been connected to big-ticket pitchers such as Justin Verlander and Marcus Stroman.
For now, though, fans will have to make do with the news of today, and that is nothing really to be excited about. It is more of an end of an era. Frazier was the main piece of a 2016 trade deadline deal that saw the Yankees trade left-handed pitcher Andrew Miller to the Cleveland Indians just two weeks before they traded Aroldis Chapman to the Chicago Cubs for Gleyber Torres.
While Miller and Chapman would both famously go on to help lead their teams to the World Series that year, with Chapman winning it all, Torres and Frazier have struggled. Torres is in danger of losing his starting job after two straight sub-optimal seasons, and Frazier is now going to be looking for a new team to play for in 2022.
