Former Michigan guard Charles Matthews took a huge blow heading into the 2019 NBA Draft.

According to Jonathan Givony of ESPN, Matthews suffered a torn ACL. His agent Adam Pensack confirmed that the 22-year-old hurt his knee during a pre-draft workout with the Boston Celtics.

The ex-Michigan standout is set to undergo surgery in Chicago with no timetable for his return.

Matthews is projected to be selected in the second round before the injury. He is considered as one of the best defenders available in the second round and is actually drawing interests from several teams. It remains to be seen, though, how the injury will affect his stock with less than a month before the draft.

Despite the setback, Pensack is confident that Matthews will bounce back stronger when he recovers. He added that Matthews would also be open to signing two-way contracts with any team.

“Injuries are tough, but Charles is an extremely hard worker and will be back stronger than ever,” Pensack said. “He had a series of outstanding workouts lately and has helped himself. Charles will continue that momentum when he returns to action.”

Matthews played one season in Kentucky before moving to Michigan. During his senior season with the Wolverines, he started in all 34 games he played and averaged 12.2 points on top of 5.0 rebounds and 1.1 steals.
