In an official statement that was released on Thursday afternoon, the Boston Celtics announced that they have entered an agreement to purchase the Maine Red Claws of the NBA's G-League.

The transaction is subject to successful finalization, according to the Celtics' press release. Once the deal has been made, the Red Claws will serve as Boston's official G League affiliate.

“Over the years, the G League and the Red Claws have become increasingly important to the Celtics and our player development efforts,” Team President Rich Gotham said in a statement. “We look forward to deepening both our ties with basketball operations and within the community, and further bringing the Celtics experience to fans in Maine.”

Given their proximity to one another, the Celtics and Red Claws should be a great fit. Both sides seem to be happy about this new agreement.

“The Celtics have been great partners with the Red Claws over the last ten seasons,” Red Claws Chairman and Principal Owner Bill Ryan Jr. said in his statement. “We are thrilled that the Celtics will continue to build upon the success we have had in making the Red Claws an important part of the Maine community.”

Most teams around the NBA landscape already have a G League affiliate. If everything goes as planned, Boston will have a partner of their own.

Boston finished the 2018-19 regular season with a 49-33 overall record, which earned the team a No. 4 overall seed in the Eastern Conference Playoffs. Unfortunately, though, the famed franchise was defeated by the Milwaukee Bucks in second round, 4-1.
