Kyrie Irving wasn't surprised to be faced with questions about his potential departure during Monday's Media Day, quickly addressing the possibility from the get-go. The Boston Celtics star has been rumored to be one of the New York Knicks' targets in the summer of 2019, which now bodes as a possibility after he turned down a contract extension earlier this summer.
āIt comes with the territory, which I understand, and also, the point Iām at in my career, it warrants that, naturally,ā said Kryie Irving of the trade rumors, according to NBC Sports Boston.
Irving knows he's in a special situation in Boston and he won't shy away from acknowledging it or the chance he has to create something with this core of players. A chance Boston wants to seize.
āItās like, man, if you only knew how special this organization was, and how special these guys are in this locker roomā¦ even if I had the inclination to test free agency, Bostonās gonna be like, āNo, youāre coming backā. And Iām fine with that.ā
If Irving decides to explore the marker, expect some resistance from president Danny Ainge and the rest of the Celtics brass, who are hoping they can use this season's success to persuade Irving to stay. The Celtics have a lot of talent, but also a lot of impending roster situations, including Kyrie Irving ā almost assuring that this core of players won't be the same to return for 2019-20.
