Boston Celtics guard Marcus Smart recently lost his mother to cancer, and everyone can relate to the pain of losing a loved one. Everyone has had to deal with the loss of a loved one and the conflicting emotions that result. On one hand, the grief of losing a loved one is palpable. But on the other hand, you believe they are in a better place now.
Smart is dealing with these emotions right now, and he gave a candid and fitting response to how he views losing a loved one, per Jay King of The Athletic.
“I like to call it a beautiful nightmare,” Smart said. “And that’s just kind of how I live: it’s a beautiful nightmare. It’s a nightmare because you can’t believe she’s gone and this has happened. But never forget, she’s gone but never forgotten. And it’s beautiful because she’s in a beautiful place.”
It's never easy to lose a loved one. Never. But there are always ways to process the grief and remember your loved ones. Smart is clearly conflicted and emotional, but he's handling it in a great way. Credit to Smart for dealing with his grief in the public eye. Once the season begins, the focus will shift back to basketball and Smart can use the game as a distraction.
